How to: Use My Own Router

The BlueDot HotSpot Management Suite utilizes the open-source software package 'Chillispot' which is most commonly packaged with the DD-WRT router firmware. If you prefer to use your own equipment with our service and are technically savvy enough to configure Chillispot, here are the steps you'll need to follow to do-so:

  1. Install DD-WRT on your Router. Due to the wide variety of hardware that DD-WRT is compatible with, we do not cover the steps for installing DD-WRT on all of them here. For information on how to install DD-WRT on your specific router, please reference their website at www.dd-wrt.com.
  2. Login to your router's web-interface
    1. Default IP: http://192.168.1.1
    2. Default Username: root
    3. Default Password: admin
  3. To configure your router using our automated configuration script:
    1. Click on the 'Administration' tab, then the 'Commands' tab
    2. Open a new browser window and login to the BlueDot HMS through our website. Click on the HotSpot you're configuring then select 'Configure Hardware'.
    3. Copy & Paste the link from the 'Automated Configuration Script' into the 'Commands' area of the router configuration, then click the 'Run Commands' button. Your HotSpot hardware is now configured; any other changes can be made through the HotSpot Management Suite online.
  4. If you prefer to configure your router manually:
    1. Click on the 'Services' tab, then the 'HotSpot' tab
    2. Under the 'Chillispot' section, select 'Enable'
    3. Open a new browser window and login to the BlueDot HMS through our website. Click on the HotSpot you're configuring then select 'Configure Hardware'.
    4. Configure the router using the settings displayed in the HMS Configure Hardware page. Once you have all of the settings configured, click the 'Save' button. Your HotSpot hardware is now configured; any other changes can be made through the HotSpot Management Suite online.

Note: To take full advantage of our HotSpot Management suite and be able to use the features such as HotSpot Monitoring and the ability to change your SSID through our web interface, please use the Automated Configuration Script described above.

Note for DD-WRT v24 users: This release of DD-WRT has a bug that may cause problems when configuring Chillispot's DHCP options. When you select the 'DHCP Interface', be sure you select "WLAN" or the wireless network card that it offers other than 'LAN' since this is your 'wired' network card.
